The Black Amber Tree is an ancient, magical tree that grows upside down in a secret room beneath the Command Center, located in SafeSpace, Seattle. Its roots sprout up all over the Command Center. The tree produces black amber from the roots and a green substance from its leaves, both capable of various magical feats. It is located in a location where ley lines intersect.
It has been shown that the lives of all magical creatures on the planet are connected with the existence of magic and are particularly tied to the life of the Black Amber Tree. If the black amber from the tree is touched by mortal hands, the magic of the tree and thus the entire magical community will be poisoned, and if magic dies, then all magical creatures will begin to die at different time intervals along with it. The Charmed Ones, being the most powerful witches, last the longest, but later they will also succumb to the same fate if the poisoning is not resolved in time.
History[]
Pre-Series[]
The tree has existed on Earth since the beginning of time. It's like a natural wellspring of magic and is much older than the Sacred Flame, which was created sometime later.[1]
During the time of either the 8th or 9th Millenium B.C., Ishta, one of the first Charmed Ones, became a guardian spirit of the tree, acting as surveillance and guarding the Black Amber Tree in hopes of meeting future Charmed Ones to help them break the cycle, as a punishment for betraying her own sisterhood when she and her fellow Charmed One Ishani entombed a power-hungry Inara alive, bringing about the destruction of the first charmed sisterhood.
During the 5th Century, an unknown mortal touched the black amber in the secret room of the Command Center. This event led to the poisoning of the magical world, destroyed the balance on Earth, and the onset of the Dark Ages. Through unknown circumstances, the tree was healed, restoring balance and life to the magical world.
Throughout the Series[]
In "The Rules of Engagement", Mel Vera finds a root sticking out of a pillar in the Command Center and finds out it is the Black Amber tree, a magical tree that insourced all magic. She tried to freeze some pens to test her powers, but it didn't work. Later, Maggie Vera touched the tree sap and immediately had a vision of Parker Caine killing Jordan Chase, and they rushed out to stop him. During the fight, Mel realized she now had the power of Molecular Manipulation.
In "Breaking the Cycle", growing frustrated with her lack of progress in restoring her witchy powers using black amber, Macy Vaughn starts digging into the ground to find more tree sap. As she and her sisters dig deeper, the Command Center suddenly activates its lockdown mode to protect the Black Amber Tree from harm. By revealing their deepest, innermost secrets, the lockdown is deactivated and the door to the tree chamber opens, allowing the sisters to descend and find the tree. There, Ishta, one of the original Charmed Ones, reveals herself to tell them of their fate if they do not find a way to break the cycle. Macy eventually drinks from the pool where the tree's sap is all gathered and restores her power of Telekinesis.
In "Unsafe Space", the Faction realizes the Vera-Vaughn sisters are witches, and resume their original plan to break into the Command Center in order to reach the Black Amber Tree.
In "Someone's Going to Die", the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones console Ishta about how to protect the tree from human hands. She suggests sealing the tree chamber for good so that no one, not even the Command Center, would have access to it. With the situation pressing in, they decide to do the spell, but before they can finish it, Vivienne Laurent, a reincarnated Conqueror, breaks in and touches the tree sap pool, poisoning it and all magic.
In "Triage", the tree starts to die due to Vivienne Laurent's actions. Other magical beings start feeling it as well. With time running out, the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones ask the Guardian for advice. She tells them the only way to revive the tree is through the greatest of all power and the greatest sacrifice. They realize it is the Source and hurry to recover their memories in order to find the pieces of Macy's broken pendant in which the Source was stored. After reuniting the pieces and forging them back together, Mel places the pendant into the tree's sap fountain. Maggie and Macy run in after her and place their hands inside the fountain, ready to sacrifice for each other instead of losing one. Though it was enough to save Mel and change the future, as well as save the magical world, the sisters also develop an allergy to all magical beings and blow a rift to the Tomb of Chaos.
In "I Dreamed a Dream…", a dying Macy Vaughn goes to the tree chamber where she says goodbye to Mel and Maggie one last time before joining Ishta to become a Guardian of the tree. Afterward, Harry Greenwood stays behind to look at the tree and the space going outwards. Mel and Maggie come back to find him still sitting there. Mel then says the Destruction of the Sisterhood was their destiny, after all. Ishta appears to them to tell them there is another out there, to everyone's shock.
In "Unlucky Charmed", the sisters mention Harry's absence, assuming he may be eating dinner in the tree room.
In "Be Kind. Rewind.", the Vera-Danso Charmed Ones sneak inside the Command Center where they drink from the basin where the tree sap is located. By drinking from it, they restore their lost powers, including the Power of Three, and prepare to save the world.Trivia[]
- In Someone's Going to Die, the Guardian said that black amber had already been poisoned by a human earlier and Dark Times had come. It has never been revealed how the tree was healed at that time, because the idea to connect the Source with the tree came to the Charmed Ones' minds heads only in Triage.
- In the original series, there was a mention of a certain source of all forms of Magic, which is most likely a reference to the All.
