Cloaking, also known as Concealment, is a magical process used to hide the presence of oneself, other beings, or locations. It is effective at preventing others from discovering one's location.

Cloaking can be achieved through the use of certain spells and potions. Additionally, beings with the power of invisibility are able to naturally cloak themselves by making themselves imperceptible to the eye.

Overview[]

It has been shown that the effect of cloaking can vary, depending upon the method used. Commonly, as shown through the cloaking serum and the power of invisibility, the user will become completely unable to be seen. However, this is not always the case. For instance, the Elders once employed a cloaking spell that did not provide any means of supernaturally hiding them, but instead completely blurred the faces of the witches, making it so that they were unidentifiable. Although, it was noted by Elder Priyanka Bari that the spell made it hard to communicate. A simple reversal spell exists for this purpose.

Additionally, the Necromancer, Knansie, was known to have cast a form of concealment spell. The exact specifics of this spell remain unknown, however it is known that this spell effectively kept her hidden from the vengeful Cyd for approximately two decades. The spell also seemingly even protected her from most magical ways of being located.

History[]

In "Bug a Boo", during Mel Vera's meeting with the Council of Elders, the senior witches utilized a cloaking spell to conceal their identities following the recent murders of three members, with the exception of Charity Callahan whom Mel had previously met.

Following her summoning by Macy Vaughn in "You're Dead to Me", Knansie's concealment spell was disrupted by Macy's ritual, prompting a frantic attempt to recreate the necessary potion but they were found by Cyd before it could be cast.

During their discussion with Macy in "Switches & Stones" concerning her burgeoning demonic nature, the Elders once again employed the same spell. Finding that the spell made it difficult to properly communicate with Macy, Elder Priyanka Bari unmasked herself to offer her assistance.

After the original Book of Shadows was destroyed by Harry Greenwood's Darklighter, Jimmy, in "Safe Space", the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones fled through a portal that was opened in its destruction and ended up in the Command Center, a base created by the Elders, in Seattle. The manor itself also went through the portal and ended up in a vacant lot near SafeSpace, Seattle, cloaked so that no one could see it.

In "Things to Do in Seattle When You're Dead", Mel Vera created a cloaking serum. It was first used as a test on an apple, which delighted Mel as she watched it disappear. She later used the serum to save Maggie Vera from Harry Greenwood's Darklighter in Minnesota. The two of them used it to infiltrate the Seventh Circle Night Club undetected in order to save Macy Vaughn and Layla Chapman.

In "When Sparks Fly", after arriving at Schmitty's Ale House in search of Macy, who had been taken by Harry's Darklighter, the demons assumed that Harry was Jimmy. The boss challenged Harry to a game of poker in order to pay Jimmy's debts, and Mel was apprehended by his demons and locked up. She was able to escape using the cloaking serum and returned back in order to help Harry cheat in the poker game. However, the serum eventually wore off, but Mel and Harry were able to escape.

In "Guess Who's Coming to SafeSpace Seattle", when Ray Vera was brought to the Vera Manor by his daughters, they found that an artifact that he had stolen contained a magical stone that bound itself to its thief. By picking up the stone, Ray unintentionally removed the cloak around the house, leaving the house visible to anyone. The cloak was eventually restored when Ray gave the stone back to its guardian, a Fury, in order to save Maggie before she was swallowed by the guardian.

In "The Enemy of My Frenemy", Macy and Maggie used the last of the cloaking serum to sneak into the Sanctuary of Zagan the Great to rescue Mel and Abigael Jameson-Caine, while Parker Caine distracted Godric and the demonic attendants.

As of "You Can't Touch This", after the defeat of the Faction, the cloak placed upon Vera Manor has been removed.

In "Perfecti Is the Enemy of Good", Mel enchanted twelve candles for protection against the Perfecti. The candles were effective in cloaking the sisters, as long as the candle remained lit. While looking for ingredients in the Command Center, Mel's candle extinguished due to the wind, allowing Mo and Aladria to locate her and emit a frequency of sound in her brain so high that it would cause her head to explode in a matter of hours. While Maggie went to Fenric the Vile disguised as Abigael, she brought with her a candle in order to keep the Perfecti away. After following the frantic Harry to the Tulipe Institute, Maggie, Macy and Celeste brought with them the candles. Realizing the golem's creation to be a trap, Celeste blew out all the candles to lower their protective charms and lure the Perfecti into their own trap.

Trivia[]

  • In the original series, Cloaking was used by Whitelighters to protect their charges by masking their presence from others. Other beings could also cloak both people and locations, making it nearly impossible for others to find them.
  • In "Safe Space", after the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones fled through a portal to escape Jimmy and ended up in the Command Center, the manor is also later revealed to have went through the portal and ended up in a vacant lot near SafeSpace, Seattle, cloaked so that no one could see it. This is possibly an effect of the Command Center and the "witchness protection program", although this is never directly specified. It's unknown exactly how the manor was cloaked and, similarly, it is never revealed the exact method used to uncloak the manor before the events of "You Can't Touch This".
    • Additionally, after the manor was uncloaked, it can be presumed that the Vera-Vaughn sisters used some form of magic to groom the lot that their home had been placed on or the manor had been moved to a more suitable property, though this is never directly specified.
