Curses are a form of dark magic that create ill effects on others, most notably humans. Curses can be cast by witches through the use of various spells and rituals. They are usually long-lasting and difficult, if not impossible, to break. Breaking a curse requires different methods depending on the nature of the curse.
Sometimes curses arise by themselves as a result of some unfair actions (betrayal, etc.) like, for example, the Destruction of the Sisterhood that started a cycle that destroyed every sisterhood of the Charmed Ones. Through various means, objects can become cursed as well and provide negative effects to those that disturb them.
Known Curses[]
Necromancy[]
Resurrecting someone through necromancy is known for having a universal price that must be paid in exchange for the resurrection. In 1990, the Elder Marisol Vera had a Necromancer named Knansie resurrect her stillborn baby daughter, Macy. In exchange for the resurrection, Macy and Marisol were only allowed to be together for two years, after which they must remain separate. Should they see each other again, Macy would die once more.[1] For this reason, Dexter and Macy moved to New York City. Dexter had Macy believe her mother died when she was two years old. Knowing her daughter would come back and unite with her sisters, Marisol accepted accepted her fate when Charity Callahan killed her.[2] Macy later took on the power of the Source and altered history to bring Marisol back, but it wound up killing Marisol when they saw each other again. Macy then decided to change fate by making Mel Vera the cursed one instead, forcing Mel and Marisol to keep apart. However, Marisol still died at Macy's hands. After reversing time through a spell called Balance Restoration, reality was restored, and Mel, Maggie, and Harry convinced Macy to give up her immense powers.[3]
5x5 Curse[]
A curse cast by Florence to condemn all males in the Chase Family to die at age twenty-five.[4] Jordan Chase managed to live past age 25 and eventually break the curse by 'balancing the scales of justice'.[5]
Mutatio[]
A curse that could turn a human being into a fly. The only way to break it is to look upon one's reflection and find solace in one's own power. Mel used it on herself to spy on Parker Caine and Godric to find out whether they were involved in killing dryads and stealing apples from the Sacred Grove. After finding the proof she needed, Mel looked at her reflection and came to the conclusion that her will and love for the people around her were enough for strength. The realization allowed her to become human again.[6]
Unity Bowl[]
The Unity Bowl is a magical object. Should a human touch it, that human will be cursed with a deadly cardiac condition that slowly builds up until it kills them. However, the curse can be lifted. By using the bowl in full, the human can drink from it and be cured. Dexter succumbed to the curse when he found one half of the bowl. Five years later, Ray Vera fell victim to the same curse, but Jordan was able to keep him alive using his healing power. In the end, they were able to find the solution and cure him.[7]
Trivia[]
- In the original series, the Charmed Ones first learned to use a curse through their revived ancestor, Melinda Warren.
