Demon-Witches are a hybrid species of witches and demons. As such, they are born with the magic of both parental species. These hybrids are very rare, as demons and witches are typically enemies. In addition to hereditary demon-witch hybrids, it is also possible for a witch or a mortal to become a demon-witch through the use of demon blood or cell transfusion.
Overview[]
Due to the circumstances surrounding her resurrection, Macy Vaughn had demonic blood flowing through her veins which provided her with demonic powers. This made her a rare nonhereditary hybrid.[1]
The first and only known hereditary hybrid of this breed shown was Abigael Jameson-Caine. She is the daughter of the demon, Alistair Caine, and witch, Francesca Jameson. Due to being a female, Abigael was looked at as an abomination by her demonic family and was raised by her mother[2], who later also abandoned her daughter because of her demon side[3]. Abigael was saved by Macy in San Francisco from a group of demons.[4]
Powers and Abilities[]
- Basic Powers
- Spell Casting: The power to cast spells and perform rituals.
- Potion Making: The power to brew magical potions.
- Active Powers
- Individual Powers: Demon-Witches can develop a variety of powers from both their demonic and witch heritages.
- Limited Shapeshifting: The ability to alter one's physical form. Demon-Witches can shift between their human and demonic forms.
- Demonic Translation: Demon-Witches have the ability to read "Illevaihcam".
- Passive Powers
- Immortality: The ability to live a potentially eternal life. It seems like nonhereditary hybrids don't have this power.
- Immunity: All demon-witches without exception are immune to the effects of pixie dust, the sirens' songs and to being frozen in time.
Weaknesses[]
- Death of Magic: All demons and witches without exception are tied to the Black Amber Tree. If the tree dies, all magic dies with it, along with them all.
- Demonic Power Stripping Ritual: Despite being immortal, their immortality could be stripped, along with all other demonic traits, effectively becoming regular witches, leaving them defenseless and killable. Despite not having any demonic powers, nonhereditary hybrids are able to keep their demon essence because their demon nature is more like an infection.[5]
- Power Binding Spell: Abigael was going to use some kind of ritual involving Jordan Chase in order to completely deprive herself of her powers and become mortal.[6]
Known Demon-Witches[]
- Abigael Jameson-Caine
- Macy Vaughn † (demonically infected)
Trivia[]
- There was only one known demon-witch in the original series, the Source's Heir, whom Phoebe was pregnant with before he was transferred into the Seer's womb and then vanquished along with her (and over 30 other demons) through his own immense-yet-unstable power.
- It appears that, unlike demon-mortal hybrids, demon-witches are physically stable, and their demon side does not attack their witch side, possibly because both sides are magical in nature. However, as with all magic, their psychological condition can affect the stability of their demonic side. For instance, Abigael Jameson-Caine was unable to control her demonic powers as a teenager due to the psychological abuse she suffered from her mother. The trauma lingered even years later, so after she regained her demon form, she lost control over it once again. It was only after drinking the mysterious elixir in the Tomb of Chaos[3] and confronting her mother that she was able to make peace with herself and regain control.
- In a mid-season interview with TVline following the Season 2 episode "Needs to Know" in which Macy Vaughn has her demonic powers stripped by Abigael, when asked if Macy would get her demon powers back, showrunners Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro replied with "FYI, she hasn’t stripped her demon essence, just her powers — and that was in order to make room for something new, hopefully."[5] However, it is not entirely clear if this plotline was followed through with, as this was never directly confirmed onscreen and provides several inconsistencies with subsequent episodes. For instance, after having her demonic powers stripped, Macy was able to touch the Book of Elders, which is impossible for demons and part-demons to achieve, thus it is unknown how Macy would be able to do this if she still had a demon essence. Furthermore, for the remainder of the second season and into the third, Macy is treated as a regular witch and shows no signs of having a demon side any longer. Despite the showrunners saying that it "was in order to make room for something new", she does not develop any further demonic powers and only gains abilities pertaining to her witch nature. Additionally, in "The Storm Before the Calm", Macy must go through Abigael once again to restore her demon powers in order to fight against the Whispering Evil with her pyrokinesis.
- Due to Macy donating her stem cells, that would technically make Kaela Danso a demon-witch, though this was never shown onscreen.
- Joey Falco tweeted "The plan was to explore Kaela's potential demon side in a Season 5". Later adding in a reply that the writers hadn't even discussed what Kaela's powers were going to be when asked if they would be the same as Macy's.[7]
