Dev Banerjee[1] was a Gandharva, a magical being that can affect his environment with his singing voice. He was a performer at the Blue Camellia that had began a budding romance with new Charmed One, Kaela Danso. Unfortunately, Dev was killed by Sunny in a vicious attack when he refused to turn his back on the Vera-Danso Charmed Ones and side with the Unseen.

History[]

Early Life[]

When Dev was fourteen years old, there was an explosion in the temple where his family performed. The explosion killed his entire family, leaving him as the sole survivor. In the years that passed, Dev became a known flamboyant performer in the magical world.[1] At some point, he dated a witch which allowed him to gain knowledge about certain potions, such as the Reconfiguration Potion[4] and Pressurized Mumford Traps.[5]

Throughout the Series[]

In "Unlucky Charmed", Dev was shown performing on stage at the Blue Camellia and enchants many female patrons while Harry Greenwood was watching. Later on, Kaela Danso caught a glimpse as Dev came out of the ladies room with two of the female patrons, annoying her as she had to wait for the restroom.

In "Ripples", after overhearing Kaela needing help on a magical matter, Dev offered his help. Kaela turned him down as she recognized him from their brief encounter the previous episode. However, when he showed her his unique affinity for music in magic, she changed her tune. He was also able to help her learn how to multiply objects through her manifesting power and she admitted to him that she was a new witch when he caught on that she wasn't experienced. He urged her to hone her powers which resulted in multitudes of martinis beginning to appear from her drawing. Duncan found Kaela's drawing of the martini and ripped it, putting an end to the magical multiplication. He then automatically blew out Kaela's candle, sending her back to the Command Center, along with Dev who was holding her hand. This resulted in Dev finding out that he was conversing with the newest Charmed One; something he was in disbelief about. Later, Dev was sent back to the club via one of the matches.

In "The Tallyman Cometh", after receiving a device from the Tallyman, Kaela took Mel Vera to the the Blue Camellia where she knows Dev and was certain that he would help. However, Dev treated Kaela coldly now knowing she's a Charmed One. Mel was astonished by his jerk behavior, since he doesn't sound how Kaela described. When Kaela urged Dev for help even opening the device, Dev fell to the ground as the frequency emitted was too high for his ears. When he recovered, Kaela asked about his sudden coldness to her. He admitted that he had heard rumors about her not even truly being a Charmed One and, more importantly, cited how the Charmed Ones didn't care for other magical species expect for witches and also he had saw the video of the spa with Maggie Vera and Mel seemingly only caring about themselves. She told him that it was not true, but he refused to listen. Later on, at an event celebrationing the one year anniversary of the Faction's fall, Kaela told Dev about the Tallyman's plan to bomb the place. He initially doesn't believe her, until Kaela told him about her background to make him see she's a real person despite being a newfound Charmed One. Dev disables the Tallyman's spiders with his singing voice. He later reconciled with her opening about his own background and expressed that he was attracted to her which is reciprocated with an kiss.

In "Cats and Camels and Elephants, oh my…", Dev was shown to have slept with Kaela when her "mom" supposedly comes into town. Kaela begged him to pretend that they're a new couple, despite her making it clear moments earlier, that nothing more than a one stand would happen between them. He agreed, but expressed interest in taking her out on a date. However, not wanting to be tied down long term, Kaela disagrees as she's still finding her bearings in the magical world. Dev sensed that "Evelyn" had cat fur on her, despite Kaela's insistence that her parents aren't the type to own pets. After realizing that the woman they have been talking to is an imposter and not Kaela's mother, Dev started to slur his words with the horrifying realization that he had been drugged or poisoned. Kaela took him to safety and expressed worry over him. Later, she took him to the Command Center, while she looked for Sunny so he would be safe and detoxed from the drug.

In "Truth or Cares", Dev helps Mel and Maggie with their stake out on Sunny. He helps Kaela escape the house they're in before it gets turn into a snow globe with Mel trapped in it with Sunny. They go back to the Command Center to brainstorm ideas how to get Mel out of there before she dies. They eventually succeed. He finally convinces Kaela to go out on a date.

In "Hashing It Out", Dev and Kaela have their first date in Vera Manor. When Mel calls Kaela to warn her about the Command Center being under attack, he joins her on the rescue mission. Mel and Maggie's powers have been neutralized by a blocker. While Maggie, Kaela, and Jordan Chase buy time, Dev goes to find the blocker, but Sunny finds him. She offers him a chance to leave the fight behind and live for himself again. He, however, refuses and knocks out the blocker, allowing Maggie and Mel to regain their powers. Sunny then kills Dev. Kaela comes out to find him dead and uses his blood to draw away Sunny's remaining lives. His body is then put on a table in the Command Center.

Later that night, Kaela finds a gift from Dev: an enchanted teapot. When she heats it to make tea, the steam plays Dev's voice humming a song to Kaela. She falls to her knees in tears, with Maggie and Mel to comfort her.

In "Divine Secrets of the O.G. Sisterhood", a memorial service was held for Dev at the Blue Camellia. Jordan played the piano and sang during the service. Afterwards, Mel and Maggie attempted to console a broken Kaela, however only inadvertently push her away. Kaela rejected being a Charmed Ones and smoked out of the club using the candles.

In "Be Kind. Rewind.", Harry used Dev's voice-recorded teapot gifted to Kaela as a way to break her out of Inara's control. Though Dev's voice brought back traumatizing memories for Kaela, it successfully helped her break free. When Inara comes for all of them, they escape to Infinite Home Video and discuss how they might fix the world. Harry shows them Dev's memorial service, which is a pivot point that may fundamentally change the course of history. Kaela and Maggie want to go back further to save Dev and Macy, but Harry discourages this because even though they would save them, the result would end the same.

At the end of the episode, Maggie sends a video tape recording all events afterwards back in time as a way to warn their past selves to change the present. The tape is sent back to Vera Manor during Dev's memorial service.

In "The End Is Never The End", Dev's memorial service ends with Kaela leaving and Joséfina coming in to tell Mel and Maggie what she found out. Kaela has fled Seattle to get away from the pain. Mel intercepts her path after watching the tape to convince her to come back with her so they may protect what they still can.

Personality[]

Dev was described as handsome, intense and charming.[6] He had shown himself to be quite knowledgeable in the magical world, with a passion for music and liked to charm women if they caught his attention. But deep down hid a lost boy who still grieved the loss of his family. When it mattered, Dev could be very reliable and courageous, and would willingly stick his neck out for those he cared for.

Physical Appearance[]

Being of Indian ethnicity, Dev had black hair, olive-toned skin, and dark brown eyes. He also had a pierced left ear, a beard, and mostly wore colored suits that enhanced his beauty.

Powers and Abilities[]

Basic Powers
  • Potion Making: The ability to brew elixirs with magical properties. Dev learned to make potions from a witch he dated.
Active Powers
  • Vocal Charisma: Dev had the power to influence people with his voice. Before meeting Kaela Danso, Dev mainly used this power through his singing to attract female patrons at the Blue Camellia.
    • Sound Emission: The ability to release magical frequencies. Dev was able to affect the Summoning Conch, though it is not exactly clear to what extent. He was also able to disable the Tallyman's spiders with his voice, preventing them from exploding when the rogue gremlin activated them. He was later able to record his voice into a teapot as a gift for Kaela, enchanting it to emit the beautiful song when the teapot is set to brew upon the stove.

Weaknesses[]

  • Pet allergy: Dev starts sneezing in the presence of pets, such as cats (this also applies to cat-like magical beings such as Nekomata Cats). It is not known what other animals he is allergic to.[7]

Relationships[]

Romantic Life[]

  • Dev and Kaela Danso: They first met at the Blue Camellia. Dev was unaware that she was the new Charmed One and Kaela caught him exiting the bathroom with two female patrons, barely zipping up his pants. This annoyed Kaela. The next time they met, Dev offered Kaela his help after overhearing her asking for Roxie. However, she turned him down outright until he showed her his unique affinity for music in magic. He was also able to help her learn how to better control her manifesting power, effectively duplicating a glass of martini before multitudes of martinis began to appear. Duncan then blew out Kaela's candle, sending her back to the Command Center, along with Dev who was holding her hand. Dev realized that she was the new Charmed One, who he had dismissed as a rumor. Even though Dev was attracted to Kaela, he put distance between them after that until he realized he couldn't fight their connection resulting in them kissing and having sex. She wanted it to be a one night stand, but admitted to wanting a date when the time for them was right. The two of them quickly begin a budding romance, until Dev's untimely demise at the hands of Sunny when he refused to back down to the Unseen. After coming across Dev's body, Kaela avenged him by killing Sunny. Later that night in the Vera Manor, she broke down, resulting in Maggie and Mel comforting her when she opened his gift to her and heard his voice coming from the enchanted teapot.

Trivia[]

  • Dev's name comes from the mythological being Deva, which is closely associated with Gandharvas in both Hinduism and Buddhism. Etymologically, Deva means "divine" or "deity".
  • In Cats and Camels and Elephants, oh my…, Dev is stated to have an allergy to certain pets like cats, which also apparently applied to cat-like beings such as Nekomata Cats. However, Dev is shown to be around Sunny, a Nekomata, beforehand and subsequently, most notably in Hashing It Out, in which times he suffered no allergic reactions.
  • According to Joey Falco on his deleted Twitter (broken link), Dev's actor, Kapil Talwalkar, blew the production crew away in auditions, but he had a prior commitment on a new NBC show (Night Court), so they agreed in his contract that they'd be done with his character by the tenth episode of Season 4. This would provide the opportunity to emotionally push Kaela to the brink.
