Joséfina Reyes is the second cousin of Mel, Maggie Vera and the late Macy Vaughn. She is a witch born without any active powers, due to being born male and her family in Puerto Rico was unwilling to help her gain her power. In hopes of finally being able to manifest her power and prove herself as a witch, she came to Seattle in 2021 searching for her family's Book of Shadows, which had been stolen many years prior by Marisol Vera. However, unbeknownst to her, the book had been destroyed two years beforehand.
Joséfina Reyes is the second cousin of the Charmed Ones. She's a witch with a mission of her own.

Joséfina briefly moved in with the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones at Vera Manor, and was able to assist Mel in fully recreating the book with entries from the original and filling it with new pages. She soon was able to manifest her witchly power, gaining the ability to create and manipulate plants. She has since returned to Puerto Rico to begin college, but maintains contact with her cousins.

Joséfina was born a male in her family, but she always knew she was really female. Although her family accepted her gender identity and eventual transition, they did not encourage her to pursue witchcraft because they believe only biological women could have magical powers. Joséfina was not discouraged and learned witchcraft through spells and potions. Eventually, her family kicked her out when they realized she was insistent on developing active powers, prompting her to travel to America to search for her family's Book of Shadows in hopes of achieving her goal.

In "No Hablo Brujeria", Joséfina broke into Vera Manor while Macy Vaughn and Jordan Chase were there. Joséfina quickly cast a spell to trap the two of them within a pocket dimension inside her bag, but as Jordan was the first one in after he had courageously stepped in front of Macy to protect her, the spell focused around him, placing Macy and Jordan inside his memories.

Mel and Maggie Vera returned to the manor, and grew confused when they realized Macy and Jordan weren't there, and the house had been searched. They then heard noises in the attic, prompting them to investigate. Joséfina was looking through the attic for something when Mel and Maggie found her, and demanded she stop and turn around. Joséfina did so, before trying to cast a spell. Mel blocked it with her powers, while Maggie used her baton to knock Joséfina over. Joséfina pleaded they don't harm her, stating she was their cousin.

They then heard noises coming from the attic, prompting them to investigate. Joséfina was looking through the attic for something when Mel and Maggie found her, and demanded she stop and turn around. Joséfina did so, before trying to cast a spell to ward off her cousins. Mel blocked it with her powers, while Maggie used her baton to knock Joséfina over. Joséfina pleaded they don't harm her, stating she was their cousin.

Not convinced, Mel and Maggie brought Joséfina down to the living room, where Josefina introduced herself as their second cousin. When Mel and Maggie expressed disbelief, Joséfina explained her mother, Marisa, was the daughter of Fabiola, who was the sister to the Charmed Ones' grandmother Julie. She then stated that Mel and Maggie probably knew her by her deadname, as she was assigned male at birth, but it was a biological mix-up because she always knew who she was, especially as she could cast spells, and believed it was only a matter of time before her magical powers present. When Maggie told her she could have just rang the doorbell rather than breaking and entering, Joséfina explained that, given the family history, she wasn't sure she'd be welcomed with open arms. Confused, Mel asked for an explanation, to which Josefina replied that Marisol had abandoned the family in Puerto Rico. Mel and Maggie don't believe it, stating Marisol had won a scholarship to college. Joséfina also insisted Marisol stole the family grimoire, the Book of Shadows, and that it belonged to her side of the family, and she was there to get it back.

Since the book had been destroyed two years earlier, Mel and Maggie explained it to Josefina. She angrily stated she had used all her money, including savings from her quince, to buy a plane ticket, only to find the Book of Shadows was gone, before asking how she knows they're telling the truth, believing that to be how the Vera family works. Mel, fed up, insisted that Josefina leave, but Joséfina refused. She wanted the Book of Shadows, and it being gone was Mel and Maggie's problem; either they find a way to produce the Book of Shadows, or she would not give them back Macy and Jordan, who she says she had locked up tight until she has what she came for.

While Jordan and Macy navigated their way through Jordan's memories, with their surrounding environment growing hotter, Mel demanded to know what Joséfina did. Joséfina explained it was a tiny brujeria spell to trap someone with whatever is in their head until either they work it out or the caster releases them. Knowing that Joséfina was not playing around, Maggie explained that Mel had been recreating the Book of Shadows, and while they can't let her have it, they can let her look at it. Mel agreed, but would only do so after Joséfina releases Macy and Jordan. Satisfied with the compromise, Joséfina agreed as well, but warned them not to cross her. However, when she went to open the bag, it burned her. Confused, Joséfina stated it shouldn't be like that, unless someone in the spell was cursed. Worried, Mel asked what would happen if they were, to which Joséfina explained the spell would destabilize and they people inside will die.

Bringing the bag to the attic, Mel tried to cool it down with a fan while also stating to Joséfina she shouldn't use spells she doesn't understand on innocent people. Joséfina apologises, but also asked how she was supposed to know Jordan was cursed. Mel insisted that Josefina let them out, but Joséfina replied she can't - with the state the bag is in, it could destabilize further and burst into flames. She also can't call her family for help because they kicked her out, explaining that they were fine with her transition, but her desire to gain her witch powers was too much for them to accept. So, Joséfina had to teach herself as much as she could, with no help from her mother or grandmother.

Sympathising with their cousin, Maggie wanted to know how Josefina would reverse the spell if Jordan wasn't cursed. Josefine explained how she would make a poultice using ingredients that Mel believed was black magic. Joséfina then explained how brujeria was only stigmatized after colonisation, and was the basis of all Western magic, including Mel and Maggie's. Maggie noticed the bag was getting hotter, and Mel stated they needed ice. Joséfina rushed to get some, giving Mel and Maggie time to talk. They both wonder why Marisol never told them about the other side of their family, but while Mel believes she had a reason, Maggie is unsure, and wonders what else they don't know. When Joséfina returned with the ice, Mel put the bag in the bowl, before stating they need to go check the Book of Elders. Joséfina realized they're bailing on brujeria, but Maggie explained how they don't have a choice, as time is running out.

In the Command Center, Mel started using her power to try and cool the bag down, while also telling Maggie and Josefina to find a way to fix the spell quickly. Maggie stated that the spell they need might not be just one form of magic, but several, and asked Mel if she remembered Walls of Steel, a fortification spell. Thinking it could be used to stabilize the bag and give Jordan and Macy more time, Maggie explained that there was one part of the spell none of them could figure out, and believed it was brujeria. Joséfina demanded to see it.

After finding the spell and showing it to Joséfina, Maggie stated what the spell needed, but they didn't know what the last bit was. Joséfina explained it was a rough translation for 'plonk' - a cheap wine - and they need a pork chop bone and a cup of peach schnapps. But when Maggie asked if that would allow them to cast the spell, Joséfina faltered; she had screwed up the last spell, and worries she'll screw up this one too. Maggie explained they need her for the brujeria, but Joséfina started to believe her family was right, and she was not a real witch. Looking at her cousin, Maggie stated how she knows what Joséfina is feeling - that she's an imposter due to looking into other people's eyes and seeing their doubts and reflecting on them - but they cannot allow other people to tell them what they are. Knowing that Maggie was right, Joséfina helped her cast the spell, buying Macy and Jordan enough time to work out Jordan's issues and escape.

Now that things were back to normal, Joséfina prepared to leave. Mel and Maggie explain how what happened that day was a regular occurrence for them, so Josefina shouldn't worry if Macy is too annoyed at her. When Maggie asked where Joséfina was going now, Joséfina stated she was going home, to explain and was ready to be lectured on how her family was right and she was 'loca'. Looking at Mel, Maggie suggested that Joséfina stay with them, and Mel stated they could help Joséfina find out how to manifest her power. Joséfina wanted to know if she would be a burden, but Mel explained that she wouldn't - they have a lot of catching up to do. Maggie also stated how she needs someone to help her brush up on Spanish.

In "Bruja-Ha", Joséfina, desperate to help her cousins fight against the beings that were being unleashed from the Tomb of Chaos, showed to Mel that she had invented a spell, by combining brujeria and Elder magic, which can contain any being using a specially tied knot. Mel, however, was against Joséfina joining her and her sisters in actively fighting the monsters, but did say she would use Joséfina's spell the next opportunity she got. Joséfina was slightly put off, but agreed.

Not too long after, Mel did end up using the Bruja's Ladder against two powerful, yet at the time unknown, beings after they attacked Harry in the Command Center, and the spell was able to bind the two beings to a railing above the door leading down to the upside-down tree. Joséfina was elated that her spell worked, but found more pressing matters were at hand - Harry had lost his powers, and Macy and Maggie were in danger. Joséfina said she would keep an eye on the two unknown beings while Mel went to Maggie, and Harry to Macy, although Mel was initially hesitent.

Joséfina said she would keep an eye on the two unknown beings while Mel went to Maggie, and Harry to Macy, although Mel was initially hesitant.

While watching over the two beings, Joséfina began trying to communicate with them, even resorting to trying to mimic the melodic sounds they created, before asking them if they could help her discover her powers. The two beings didn't answer in a way that Joséfina understood, but she decided to release them by reversing the spell that was restraining them. The beings then advanced on Joséfina, using their powers on her.

When Mel and Maggie returned to the Command Center, they found Joséfina on the ground, unconscious, and the rope that was binding the beings on the ground near her. Maggie stayed in the Center to make sure Joséfina was okay, while Mel decided to hunt down the two beings and vanquish them. However, after she left, Joséfina awoke, and explained to Maggie what had happened. Fortunately, the two were quick enough to stop Mel and Macy from using the Bruja's Ladder to restrain the two beings and then vanquish them with an axe, by stating they weren't harming anyone, just trying to learn about the world.

At the same time, a demon that Macy had vanquished earlier had resurrected itself, and made to attack. Before it could, the two beings used their powers to open the Tomb of Chaos and imprison the demon again. The beings then revealed that they had built the Tomb of Chaos (after dismissing the name at first), and were called the Perfecti, individually known as Mo and Aladria. They both apologised for their seemingly brash methods, but they needed to quickly learn how far the world had progressed, before they returned Harry's powers to him, and asked to speak to the Charmed Ones alone.

Afterwards, Mel met with Joséfina at the house. Joséfina was slightly upset that the Perfecti couldn't help her with finding her powers, as they can't grant them, only borrow. Mel reasoned that, even without powers, Joséfina was still a talented witch, who invented a great spell. She then showed Joséfina something that she had been working on: a brand new Book of Shadows. Joséfina was delighted at the sight, as well as how Mel had added the Bruja's Ladder to it, while Mel explained that, as most of the book was still blank, she and Joséfina could both fill it in.

In "Witchful Thinking", while the Charmed Ones worked with the Perfecti to find a way to remove the allergy causing the Charmed Ones to be repelled by any magical being, Joséfina worked on finishing the Book of Shadows. She had invented a potion that replicated the power of Temporal Stasis, but only lasted about a minute, and discovered a spell that was part of a witchual - a witch ritual - that allowed a witch to unlock her powers. However, she was having trouble deciphering parts of the spell, and needed access to a book in the Seattle State College library. Mel agreed to let her into the college, and gave her a temporary ID card. Unfortunately, as the book Joséfina was after was rare and old, the librarian refused to give it to her, as she was not a student of the university. Slightly annoyed, Joséfina used her freezing potion on the librarian, and took the book, although Mel was initially against it. Joséfina argued she was going to give it back, and only needed it for a little while.

The Charmed Ones efforts to reverse the allergy ended up working, but had the unintended side effect of causing all of their wishes to be granted, at the expense of others. During this, Joséfina successfully completed the witchual, and was able to manifest her powers. However, the Charmed Ones and Harry had all agreed to reverse what had been done, as they did not want to live in a world where all of their desires were made real while other people suffered. Joséfina refused to allow it to happen, since everyone believed her powers had manifested due to her desires also getting realised, and used her powers to trap Mel, Maggie, Macy, and Harry using vines in the garden. Mel was able to talk Joséfina into releasing them, by pointing out that she knows what Joséfina is going through, but being a witch is more than having powers - it's about making the world a better place.

The Charmed Ones efforts to reverse the allergy ended up working with the use of an Enchanted Egg, but this had the unintended side effect of causing all of their wishes to be granted at the expense of others. Although the Perfecti were confused as to why the Charmed Ones would want to reverse their actions, they explained that if they place the artefact that stopped the allergy back where they found it, everything would be undone. The sisters and Joséfina travelled back to the cave where the artefact was found, and placed it back. However, the cave began to crumble around them, and their way back collapsed, trapping them. Out of instinct, Joséfina made to use her power, and it worked, causing vines to grow across the gap and form a bridge, meaning her powers weren't the result of a granted wish.

Later on, Joséfina and the sisters fully performed the witchual, officially recognising Joséfina's powers.

History

Early Life

Joséfina was born a male in her family, but she always knew she was really female. Although her family accepted her gender identity and eventual transition, they did not encourage her to pursue witchcraft because they believe only biological women could have magical powers. Joséfina was not discouraged and learned witchcraft through spells and potions. Eventually, her family kicked her out when they realized she was insistent on developing active powers, prompting her to travel to America to search for her family's Book of Shadows in hopes of achieving her goal.

Throughout the Series

In "No Hablo Brujeria", Joséfina broke into Vera Manor while Macy Vaughn and Jordan Chase were there. Joséfina quickly cast a spell to trap the two of them within a pocket dimension inside her bag, but as Jordan was the first one in after he had courageously stepped in front of Macy to protect her, the spell focused around him, placing Macy and Jordan inside his memories.

Mel and Maggie Vera returned to the manor, and grew confused when they realized Macy and Jordan weren't there, and the house had been searched.

Not convinced, Mel and Maggie brought Joséfina down to the living room, where Joséfina introduced herself as their second cousin. Confused, Mel asked for an explanation, to which Josefina replied that their mother had abandoned the family in Puerto Rico. Mel and Maggie don't believe it, stating Marisol had won a scholarship to college. Joséfina also insisted Marisol stole the family grimoire, the Book of Shadows, and that it belonged to her side of the family, and she was there to get it back.

Since the book had been destroyed two years earlier, Mel and Maggie explained it to Joséfina. She angrily stated she had used all her money, including savings from her quince, to buy a plane ticket, only to find the Book of Shadows was gone, before asking how she knows they're telling the truth, believing that to be how the Vera family works. Mel, fed up, insisted that Joséfina leave, but Joséfina refused.

Worried, Mel asked what would happen if they were, to which Joséfina explained the spell would destabilize and the people inside will die.

Bringing the bag to the attic, Mel tried to cool it down with a fan while also stating to Joséfina she shouldn't use spells she doesn't understand on innocent people. Joséfina apologizes, but also asked how she was supposed to know Jordan was cursed. Mel insisted that Joséfina let them out, but Joséfina replied she can't - with the state the bag is in, it could destabilize further and burst into flames. She also can't call her family for help because they kicked her out, explaining that they were fine with her transition, but her desire to gain her witch powers was too much for them to accept. So, Joséfina had to teach herself as much as she could, with no help from her mother or grandmother.

Sympathizing with their cousin, Maggie wanted to know how Joséfina would reverse the spell if Jordan wasn't cursed. Joséfina explained how she would make a poultice using ingredients that Mel believed was black magic. Joséfina then explained how Brujeria was only stigmatized after colonization, and was the basis of all Western magic, including Mel and Maggie's.

When Macy and Harry Greenwood spoke an ancient incantation from a stone tablet, Joséfina watched with the others from the windows of the manor as it began raining scorpions.

Not too long after, Mel did end up using the Bruja's Ladder against two powerful, yet at the time unknown, beings after they attacked Harry in the Command Center, and the spell was able to bind the two beings to a railing above the door leading down to the Black Amber Tree. Joséfina was elated that her spell worked, but found more pressing matters were at hand - Harry had lost his powers, and Macy and Maggie were in danger.

Fortunately, the two were quick enough to stop Macy and Mel from using the Bruja's Ladder to restrain the two beings and then vanquish them with an axe, by stating they weren't harming anyone, just trying to learn about the world.

At the same time, a gigantic worn monster that Macy had vanquished earlier had regenerated itself, and made to attack. Before it could, the two beings used their powers to open the Tomb of Chaos and imprison the monstrous being once again. The beings then revealed that they had built the Tomb of Chaos (after dismissing the name at first), and were called the Perfecti, individually known as Mo and Aladria. They both apologized for their seemingly brash methods, but they needed to quickly learn how far the world had progressed, before they returned Harry's powers to him, and asked to speak to the Charmed Ones alone.

The Charmed Ones efforts to reverse the allergy ended up working with the use of an Enchanted Egg, but this had the unintended side effect of causing all of their wishes to be granted at the expense of others. During this, Joséfina successfully completed the witchual, and was able to manifest her power. However, the Charmed Ones and Harry had all agreed to reverse what had been done, as they did not want to live in a world where all of their desires were made real while other people suffered. Joséfina refused to allow it to happen, since everyone believed her powers had manifested due to her desires also getting realized, and used her powers to restrain Mel, Maggie, Macy, and Harry using vines in the garden. Mel was able to talk Joséfina into releasing them, by pointing out that she knows what Joséfina is going through, but being a witch is more than having powers - it's about making the world a better place.

Although the Perfecti were confused as to why the Charmed Ones would want to reverse their actions, they explained that if they place the artifact that stopped the allergy back where they found it, everything would be undone. The sisters and Joséfina travelled back to the cave where the artifact was found and placed it back, effectively reversing the egg's effects. However, the cave began to crumble around them, and their way back collapsed, trapping them. Out of instinct, Joséfina made to use her power, and it worked, causing vines to grow across the gap and form a bridge, meaning her powers weren't the result of a granted wish from the egg.

Later on, Joséfina and the sisters fully performed the witchual, officially recognizing Joséfina's powers. Joséfina explained that, having taken Mel's advice into consideration, she decided to return home to Puerto Rico, and go to college. Before leaving, she gave her cousins a gift - the now completed Book of Shadows, much to Mel, Macy, and Maggie's amazed delight.

In "Schrodinger's Future", Joséfina was mentioned as one of the creators of the Temporal Tea.

Joséfina accidentally spills some remaining potion on the letter, revealing hidden words. They reveal the rest of the words and, reading them, realize Marisol had a vision of three daughters and knew they would become the Charmed Ones; she stole the Book of Shadows to protect her family on both sides.

Left with no choice, Mel takes an antidote to unblock her powers in order to confront the Whispering Evil. In "Not That Girl", Joséfina has been staying with Mel and Maggie Vera since Macy Vaughn died. She plans to stay in Seattle until she is no longer needed. She tries to convince her cousins to attend a pixie fledgling ceremony, but both dismiss it.

Deep down, though, Joséfina was initially insecure and determined to prove herself, going through great lengths to achieve her goals, including using magic to steal a book from a university library when she was denied access. She even once used her powers on her cousins when she believed they were going to reverse what gave her those powers, but let them go when Mel talked her down and explained her powers are not the only thing that makes her a witch.

When believing she's been wronged, Joséfina can come across as rude and standoffish, but if amends have been made, or if she trusts someone, she is shown to be very kind and caring. She loves her cousins, and will willingly help them when asked, even coming back to Seattle from Puerto Rico when Mel needed help with a Brujeria spell to prevent her baby from the future from being born in the present.

Due to her upbringing in Puerto Rico, Joséfina occasionally speaks in Spanish, even while talking to others in regular English.
