Ruby Malone[4] is a retired witch and a former bartender at SafeSpace, Seattle whom had been crushing on Mel Vera for a period of time before eventually asking her out. The two of them dated for a time, but Ruby eventually broke up with Mel. She is currently in a relationship with Swan, and the two are volunteering with homeless LGBTQ+ kids.

History[]

Early Life[]

Ruby's father died before she was born. She was raised by a single mother who always said Ruby was "special" and never hid anything from her daughter. When Ruby was 16, her mother brought a man into their lives who turned out to be a demon and tried to kill them both. It shook Ruby's mother to her core, so she wanted out. At the age of 18, Ruby received permission from her mother to choose her own life path, but Ruby also chose a normal life without magic and ended up in Witchness Protection.[6]

Throughout the Series[]

In "Needs to Know", Ruby sees Mel Vera when she approaches the bar, they have a brief conversation, after which Ruby asks her out. Mel doubts that she can start a new relationship right now, and Ruby leaves her number on a napkin if she changes her mind.
Later, after the death of Helen McGantry, Mel decides to put aside her fears and doubts and go on a date with Ruby.

In "Breaking the Cycle", Mel wakes up the next morning in bed with Ruby and meets her roommates who approve of her. TBA

In "Unsafe Space", it is revealed that Ruby is also a witch, having been placed in Witchness Protection two years after almost being killed by her mom's man who turned out to be a demon. Ruby's mother gave up her powers to avoid repeating the trauma two years prior after the trauma.

When Ruby turned 18, she was given the choice to "retire" being a witch as well, and she ultimately chose to. While she no longer had her active powers, she retained her basic abilities of spell casting and potion making. When Mel ran into her at the club where retired witches frequent, Mel realizes the truth. Because they needed to sneak inside the Command Center, Mel asked Ruby to borrow her portal-making marble to them. She agreed out of caring. However, after Macy and Maggie were both trapped inside the marble, Mel learned that she needed Ruby as well to make the marble work. She persuaded Ruby to help them free her sisters and break into the Command Center. When Jimmy tries to escape, Ruby casts a storm spell to keep him from entering the portal he created, allowing Harry to neutralize his powers and knock him out.

Ruby and Mel have a conversation at the docks, where Mel tries to convince her to embrace herself as a witch to no avail. Ruby wishes to be with Mel without partaking in her Wiccan life. This puts them at odds with each other.

In "An Inconvenient Truth", Ruby was mentioned by Mel Vera when she told Maggie that "there are people out there just living their lives." Later, Mel enthusiastically said that when they stopped the Faction, she's going to work out everything with Ruby, and her sister is going to work out everything with Jordan Chase.

In "Someone's Going to Die", TBA. Later, while she's with Mel, Ruby starts coughing up ash. Mel brings her to see the others at the Command Center where they speak with the Guardian who tells them that magic is dying.

In "Triage", Mel and Abigael Jameson-Caine time travel to the year 2070 to Evergreen Cemetery in Hilltowne, where they see a much older Ruby laying flowers on Mel's grave, telling her granddaughter that Mel had sacrificed herself for the magical world. Mel tells Abigael that they must go back to their own time, which they do.

In "You Can't Touch This", Mel informs Maggie that she has a long-distance relationship with Ruby from six feet away, due to the magical allergy keeping them apart.

In "Private Enemy No. 1", TBA

In "Witchful Thinking", TBA

In "Spectral Healing", TBA

In "Perfecti Is the Enemy of Good", she took care of Mel while Maggie and Macy tried to find a way to defeat Mo and Aladria. Ruby was there when Mel came out of her coma, and she was the first to see Mel's pregnancy sent from the future.

In "Schrodinger's Future", Ruby brings Mel healthy foods and books for her baby. When Celeste tells Mel to prepare extra Temporal Tea for when Macy and Maggie return from the future, Mel is distressed since she doesn't have enough time to make more than one batch. Ruby then concocts a potion to speed up her movement and helps brew more temporal tea. She then collapses from overheating. Mel manages to cool her down. When they realize they can touch with setting off Mel's allergy, they are ecstatic and quick to embrace. Ruby and Mel later sit in the backyard and talk about the future. She was initially uncertain about becoming a mother, but having been through everything today made her realize she was ready for anything.

In "I Dreamed a Dream…", after Future Mel took her baby, Ruby was next to her girlfriend and comforted her in connection with Macy's death. Mel and Ruby broke up sometime after.

In "Not That Girl", it was revealed that Ruby had broken up with Mel, though Mel refused to tell anyone the reason why.

In "Unlucky Charmed", Mel revealed to Maggie that she proposed to Ruby one month after Macy died, but she turned her down. They broke up afterwards. Mel finally reached out to Ruby to talk about what went wrong with their relationship. Ruby told her their relationship had been all about her, and she had doubts about how well Mel really knew her.

In "Ripples", TBA

In "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Sandwich", TBA

In "Cats and Camels and Elephants, oh my…", TBA

In "Unveiled", Ruby recalled how she went into Witchness Protection when her ex-step-father, Earl, found her and left a bunch of sunflowers on her car with a note. She confided in Mel about worrying that her politics had alerted him, despite demons usually never paying attention to that stuff. Mel later found out Ruby was being targeted because she's a well-known Charmed One association. Mel and Ruby cast a protection spell on Ruby and other allies. They lure Earl to the Blue Camellia, where Ruby kills him after he kills her. Ruby tells Mel afterwards the protection spell was a one-time deal and that even though it didn't seem like Ruby was a pretty big deal to her, she's happy that they're friends.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • On July 11, 2021, Bethany Brown stated on her Instagram that she knew her character's last name, but the only thing she revealed is that it started with a 'W'. However, in the episode Unveiled, it was revealed to be Malone.
    • It is possible that this could have been retconned since then, as this information had not officially appeared onscreen yet. It is also possible that Ruby and her mom took on a different last name to shake Earl off their trail, similar to how Macy Vaughn took on the last name "Flores" during her time under the Witchness Protection.
  • It is currently unknown what Ruby's power was as a witch before her aura was stripped as she went through Witchness Protection. Though, in the episode Unveiled, Ruby and her mother used the Storm Spell to defend themselves against Earl in a flashback instead of using their powers. This can lead to the assumption that their powers weren't offensive or defensive in nature.
  • It looks like Ruby was going to be one of Mel's exes who would have to confront her new relationship with Roxie in the cancelled fifth season.
