The cycle reperes,
The wheel turns,
One third always departs,
but the world never turns!

The Destruction of the Sisterhood, also known as The Day of the Fall[1], The Destruction Cycle[2], or just The Cycle[3], is an ancient curse created by the Power of Three in succession of the Original Sin of the first Charmed Ones of the rebooted world in which Ishta and Ishani entombed their third fellow Charmed One Inara alive and inadvertently brought about the end of their sisterhood.[2][1] Consequentially, it resulted in a cyclical succession of tragic events across the multiverse culminating with the premature death of one of the Charmed Ones and the reincarnation of the Power of Three into a next charmed trio to suffer from the same fate. With the destruction of the sisterhood, the Power of Three would be lost until the next Charmed Ones are activated, and the cycle would start all over again.

According to Ishta and Ishani, Inara's entombment by them was what started the cycle[2], but it is unknown if the curse still exists after the first Charmed Ones reconciled and sacrificed themselves to save the world.[4]

Overview[]

The Power of Three can set you free. Or it can weigh you down. There can be no secrets, no resentments, nothing unspoken. Or it will destroy you.

Before the sisterhood's destruction could occur, each trio of the Charmed Ones would be tested of their sisterly bond, and once the time came, said trio would need to prepare for the greatest sacrifice; their willingness to die for each other. It was currently unclear if the curse could ever have been broken by a powerful enough sisterly emotional bond shared between the trio, or if it broke after the Originals sacrificed themselves to save the world, and right the wrongs which ultimately resulted in the creation of the curse in the first place.[3]

History[]

The Day of the Fall[]

... Anyway, the argument tore us apart. Inara grew to hate us. She wanted to take on all that power and fix things as a "benign" Conqueror. But we knew where that would lead. So Ishta and I made the hardest decision of our lives... We sealed her up in a tomb in the Akhatu Mines, where she wouldn't be a threat to us or the world... We thought we had no choice. But the magic that empowered us, it punished us for destroying the sisterhood. Ishta was bound to the Tree to serve as Guardian to future Charmed Ones, and I was left to wander the Earth alone for all eternity. This original sin, the Day of the Fall, it's also why every sisterhood since has been doomed to be destroyed. Even when they are bound by blood.

Inara entombed

Inara's entombment destroys the first Charmed sisterhood

After the defeat of the first Conqueror, during the time of either the 8th or 9th millennium B.C., Inara, one of the first Charmed Ones, wanted to restore the stolen power of the Conqueror and to put magic everywhere. Ishta and Ishani, the other two Charmed Ones, disagreed, knowing it would continue to create temptation for another Conqueror to rise. So, they combined the power in one place and hid it so no one could find it, thus creating the Source. However, the argument tore the Charmed Ones apart, with Inara growing power hungry and wanting to take on the power herself, which resulted in Ishta and Ishani entombing her alive south of Baghdad in the Akahtu Mines. This came at the cost of betraying their sisterhood and thus created a vicious cycle of destruction that lasted for millennia.

As additional punishment for betraying their sisterhood, Ishta was bound to the Black Amber Tree to serve as its guardian and act as surveillance in hopes of meeting future Charmed Ones to help them break the cycle, while Ishani was forced to wander the Earth alone for all eternity, watching events play out from the sidelines. This event became known as The Day of the Fall.[1]

Continuous Repeats[]

No matter the time, the place or the realm, generations of the Charmed Ones to come had continued to suffer the destruction of their sisterhoods, meeting their end through either the weight of the Power of Three or being killed in the midst of battle.[3]

We have to destroy the Charmed Ones! Just like we did in the past.

Flashback about some of the ancient Charmed Ones before their death because of the Perfecti

Eventually, one generation of Charmed Ones battled the Perfecti using the Power of Three. Though the witches were able to lock the duo up and put them in a slumber inside the tomb dimension of their own making, the Perfecti had a golem bring about the end that sisterhood, though it is not specified which of them died during this battle.[5]

The Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones[]

The destruction of the sisterhood is inevitable.

On February 14th, 2021, after all three pieces of Macy Vaughn's yin yang pendant were recovered, the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones used the Source Fusing Spell to reforge the pendant and the power of the Source within. Mel Vera then took the pendant and put it inside the black amber tree's fountain. As its magic began to fuse with the tree's, Macy and Maggie Vera joined in and fought to keep Mel alive. The process revived the magical world and saved the Charmed Ones while also triggering the security system of the Tomb of Chaos and infected the sisters with an allergy to magical creatures.[6]

Beware! The worst is yet to come.

3x18 Macy's soul ascends

Macy's departure destroyed the Vera-Vaughn sisterhood

Months later, Macy Vaughn traveled to the Cave of Ancients to collect a sample of bioluminescent lichen, the only toxin capable of destroying the Whispering Evil. Almost immediately after collecting the sample, the Whispering Evil ambushed her in the cave and attempted to possess her, telling her to become one with him. Macy thought back to her trip to the future where her future self was possessed and fought against his control long enough to ingest the toxin into herself to vanquish the Whispering Evil once and for all. Though she was successful, the impact of its death caused cellular damage in her body, dooming her life. Despite the efforts of her sisters and Harry Greenwood, the damage was irreparable as Ishta had appeared in a dying Macy's dreamworld to inform her that she was on the verge of becoming a guardian. In the end, having come to terms with what had happened, her sisters took the dying Macy to Ishta, where her soul separated from her body and ascended, becoming part of the magical world.[7]

Return of the Originals[]

4x13 Destruction of the O.G. Sisterhood

Second destruction of the O.G. Charmed Ones

With no other alternative to stop Inara's new plan being the Nebron Root Bomb, which rendered them both worried and anxious as they knew what that meant for them and, by extension, all of magic, Ishta and Ishani watched as the Vera-Danso sisterhood resurrected Inara, who scoffed at her fellow Charmed Ones' sincere apologies and expressed her unwillingness to help, only for the three of them to be told off by the Vera-Danso sisterhood, who were perfectly willing to make the ultimate sacrifice even after Ishta explained that it was the only way to stop the bomb's explosion's impacts. Mel even shamed Ishta's, Inara's, and Ishani's legacy as "a sisterhood that ruins the world". At this, the three original Charmed Ones finally saw sense, and sacrificed themselves to save the Vera-Danso sisterhood and, by extension, the entire magical world, having a spiritual and emotional reconciliation as they did so.[4]

Alternate Timelines[]

  • Macy altered her fate after becoming the Source. She was stillborn at infancy, and Marisol Vera brought her back to life with a Necromancer named Knansie. After becoming the Source, Macy used her new power over reality to change the timeline to where she was never resurrected. Mel and Maggie, whose memories remained intact due to a memory potion, used a spell and Mel's Time Bracelet to return to the moment the Power of Three ruptured.[8]
  • Mel died in an alternate timeline after merging the Source with the Black Amber Tree on February 14th, 2021 to save the magical world from extinction, bringing about the destruction of the Vera-Vaughn sisterhood. This timeline was erased by the sisters' willingness to give their lives for each other, effectively saving one another in the process.[9]
  • In a dark future, Maggie Vera was killed by Abigael Jameson-Caine due to infection by the Whispering Evil while Macy was taken over by it. In this alternate timeline, almost all magical beings and humans were destroyed by 2026, and it is assumed that the Vera-Vaughn sisters were the last Charmed Ones in this world. This dark future was erased when the Whispering Evil was vanquished in 2021.[10]
  • After reclaiming the Power of Three, Mel was killed by Inara, who then proceeded to kill Maggie and Kaela. Maggie managed to temporarily copy Mel's temporal powers and send a videotape back in time to warn their past selves of the danger looming ahead. By knowing what to expect and what to change, their past selves evaded death and changed the outcome.[11]

Fatalities[]

NOTE: This list should be put in chronological order. It is unknown how many Charmed Ones between Inara and Eve Lee died in this cycle, if any. In "Perfecti Is the Enemy of Good", it was revealed that there was an ancient incarnation of the Charmed Ones killed by a golem controlled by the Perfecti, but their names were not revealed. It is also unknown whether their names were included within the list in the Book of Elders and which of them died first. Between Leah Price and Tiffany Montgomery, there was one deceased Wright sister who was unnamed. Also, between Rose North and Nicole Sanchez, there was one deceased B. sister that was also unnamed. It is unknown how many Charmed Ones between Gloria Andrews and Macy Vaughn died in this cycle, if any. In "Breaking the Cycle", Marisa Underwood, Georgia Warden, Noelle Bond and Hazel Lord were listed in between Cynthia Parkes and Whitney Adams, but in "You Can't Go Home Again", they were written before the Vera-Vaughn-Danso sisterhood; it is currently left unexplained.

Trivia[]

PruePiper3x22

Prue's death destroys the first Charmed sisterhood

  • The Destruction of the Sisterhood is a reference to the world of the original series, where after their eldest sister's death, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell lost the Power of Three until the appearance of their long-lost half-sister Paige Matthews.
  • The names of all Charmed Ones killed, resulting in the destruction of the sisterhood, were written in red ink and were always written third in the namelist of the Charmed Ones written in the Elders' magical tome.
  • The Vera sisters are seemingly the first Charmed Ones to have suffered the destruction of the sisterhood and carry on being Charmed Ones with a new fellow Charmed One.
    • It is currently unknown if the Vera-Danso Charmed Ones will end up suffering the destruction of the sisterhood, or survive it, and which of them might die first.
    • However, as seen in "You Can't Go Home Again" when Harry wrote the Vaughn-Vera sisters in the Book of Elders, the book magically added a space for Kaela under Macy's name signaling that, despite Kaela's appearance making an entirely new trio of Charmed Ones with two former Charmed Ones, she in fact restored their broken group because of the reveal in "Truth or Cares" that she has Macy's DNA in her which mutated into part of her own DNA when Kaela underwent cancer treatment causing Kaela to be Macy's replacement when the time came.
  • Despite the initial description, Macy Vaughn did not die because of the Power of Three. Rather, she willingly sacrificed herself to destroy the Whispering Evil when it tried to possess her and she made the choice to consume the lichen that could destroy it, killing herself in the process and bringing about the destruction of the Vera-Vaughn sisterhood.
    • It seems that, despite the weight of the Power of Three being the most common cause, it is also possible for the destruction of the sisterhood to take place by other means. In several cases, including Macy and Inara, the destruction has taken place whilst in the midst of battle with certain powerful, magical beings or as a result of a betrayal.
  • According to Ishta, each trio of sisters undergoes a sisterhood test to break the cycle.[3] In "Triage", the Vera-Vaughn sisters assumed that their willingness to sacrifice themselves for each other stopped the curse of the Charmed Ones, but in "I Dreamed a Dream…", Macy eventually died anyway and the destruction of the sisterhood took place. Macy then revealed that Ishta meant a life-long sacrifice all along.
  • The first Charmed Ones are seemingly the first to suffer the destruction of the sisterhood twice following Inara's brief resurrection and the sacrifice of the O.G. sisterhood.
  • According to Ishta, the curse of the Day of the Fall exists in other realms of the multiverse as well.
    • It implies that Prue's death in the original series was more than just a mere tragic accident but rather a higher fate dooming every charmedhood across the multiverse.
