The Replacement is the eighteenth episode of the first season of Charmed and the eighteenth episode of the series overall. It premiered on April 21, 2019.

Synopsis[]

REVELATIONS — When Harry (Rupert Evans) mysteriously disappears, a substitute Whitelighter, Tessa (guest star Chloe Bridges), surprises the sisters. With Galvin's (Ser'Darius Blain) return imminent, Macy (Madeleine Mantock) knows she must tell him her decision about her demon side. Niko (Ellen Tamaki) is curious when she sees that the Sarcana has cleared out and calls Mel (Melonie Diaz) for clarity, but when Mel arrives she is alarmed at what she discovers. Meanwhile, Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) is trying to figure out how she can pay for college and turns to Macy for guidance.

Plot[]

Galvin manages to find an ancient artifact in the jungle. Meanwhile in Hilltowne, Mel is magically pulled out of bed in the middle of the night. She warns her sisters, but when they go to check the Book of Shadows, they discover that it was all a sham organized by their new Whitelighter, Tessa, who wanted to test their abilities.

The three don't like her methods, but she remembers that when they met him, Harry kidnapped them and tied them to chairs. The three reply that it was a difficult start, but that Harry later learned to respect them and that Tessa has no right to criticize him. She apologizes, but states that they are poorly trained as witches and that they have to worry about fighting the Source, and when Maggie asks if there are any signs of the prophecy coming true, Tessa recaps the latest events and tells the Charmed Ones that they will have to learn to fight without use the book. Then she leaves. The next morning Mel reminds her sisters that they can no longer speak ill of the Elders openly and that they must use a anti-surveillance candle. Soon after, Maggie discovers that now that her mother is dead, she has to pay her college tuition, which amounts to thirty thousand dollars, while Galvin lets Macy know that he will be coming home that evening. Macy is happy to see him, but she doesn't know how to tell him that she has decided to keep her demonic side. While at work Mel is approached by Niko who asks her about the Sarcana, but Mel replies that she is no longer part of it and that she is no longer with Jada. Niko claims that Sarcana has disappeared, and that she didn't go to the club for work, but because she and Greta are having their hen party there. Mel is shocked by the news, also because she will be on duty that evening. Galvin returns and tells Macy that he has completed his mission, but just then a body crashes into the living room. Galvin recognizes the dead man as the customs agent who stopped him at the airport. To prevent Tessa from seeing Galvin and finding out that he knows their secret, Macy pushes him into the closet with telekinesis.

Tessa arrives soon after and says that she sent the body and when she realizes that there is a protective spell, Mel makes up that they are using it to stop the demons from spying on them.

Tessa asks the Charmed Ones to identify the type of demon who carried out the murder and seeing two small marks on the victim's neck, Macy assumes it is a vampire. Tessa agrees and entrusts Maggie with the task of watching over the corpse, in case he wakes up as a vampire, while Macy and Mel go to eliminate the vampire.

Fearing that Galvin has brought something with him, Macy asks if she can check out the Yoruba artifacts that are supposed to free her from the darkness while he goes home. Macy and Mel then bring the artifacts to Mama Roz to examine, while Maggie studies the spells and consider applying for a scholarship for students of color. However, he stops when he hears strange sounds and calls Tessa to whom she tells what happened and she says that her powers are probably expanding and she heard the thoughts of the dead man's soul. The next day, Macy explains to Galvin why she doesn't want treatment and he accepts her decision. That evening, Maggie asks Macy if she should apply for a black scholarship and if she should go to a black student reunion. Macy tells her that she has the right and that she should do what she feels like.

Meanwhile, Galvin goes to Mama Roz and kills her with claws that came out of his hands, after she revealed to him that Macy knows nothing. At the reunion, Maggie hears strange noises again and leaves, while Mel is forced to watch Niko and Greta celebrate their love. Maggie joins her and Mel decides to go and ask Mama Roz for advice, so the two find her body and notice that she has the same small holes that were on that of the customs agent. At that moment Tessa also arrives and Maggie decides to ask her for help so she can find out if she can contact Mama Roz's soul. She says yes and Maggie discovers that it was an Abiku who killed the psychic. Realizing that her powers are trying to expand, and that she must let them, she hears a cry for help from Galvin who has been possessed by the Abiku.

While Macy is having dinner with Galvin, the abiku reveals itself and attacks her, wanting to take her body, as its species favors those of stillborn children. Maggie also gets there having learned from Mama Roz that she must use a specific dagger to save Galvin. The three manage to find the two, in the woods and Mel stops time to allow her half-sister to escape, but the abiku is very strong and won't be able to hold it back for long.

Macy is afraid to use the dagger because she fears killing Galvin, although Tessa doesn't care, so Macy decides to use telekinesis to stop Galvin's heart hoping that the abiku cannot survive and will have to leave her boyfriend's crop. Maggie approves of the plan and casts a spell to restrain Tessa. Macy succeeds, but as soon as she restarts Galvin's heart, the abiku returns to his body. The demon takes Macy to the attic to kill her in the place where she was brought back to life, but luckily Tessa and her sisters manage to reach her and after a tough fight they kill the parasite. Tessa chastises the sisters for not erasing Galvin's memory, saying that they may have affairs, but that it shouldn't affect their duty and that Macy needs to stop relying on her demonic side, but she retorts that that might be what it is used to beat the Source.

Galvin later tries again to convince Macy to seek treatment, but she still refuses and when he asks her why she would want to keep something like the abiku inside her. Macy states that her actions define her as Harry told her, but Galvin replies that even if she isn't evil, a part of her is, something he can't ignore and that he no longer wants to have anything to do with magic, and although he and Macy love each other he decides to end their relationship. Mel and Maggie try to console her, but Mel has to leave to take a call from Niko, and Maggie tells her that even though she feels torn apart, it doesn't erase the good inside her. Macy says that when she wants to talk to her about the fact that she now knows that she is half black she is there. Her sister thanks her, and she says that she has decided not to apply for the scholarship for black students. Niko makes Mel go to the Mystic Mayhem Tattoo Parlor that was destroyed, but despite her words, Niko doesn't believe that Mel knows nothing about what happened and since she's getting there now she reveals to her that she's a witch, and convinces her to go away saying that she will explain better afterwards.

Left alone, she casts the spell to enter the Sarcana hideout and discovers that the entire coven has been massacred except Jada, who tells her that it was Fiona who did this, and that she was saved only because she is more resistant as she is half-Whitelighter.

She also holds Harry hostage. Jada decides to escape town before Fiona finds her and tries to urge Mel to do the same to her sisters, but she retorts that it's their duty to fight. After warning her that Fiona is just as powerful as them, Jada gives her one last kiss and teleports away. Soon after, Mel finds a strange key and takes it home, where Maggie speculates it's a clue left by Harry so they can find him.

Trivia[]

Galvin Burdette returns in this episode after a four-episode absence. He was last seen in Manic Pixie Nightmare.
The episode title refers to Tessa being the Charmed Ones' "replacement" Whitelighter after Harry is stripped of his powers.
This is the first episode in which Harry Greenwood (one of the main characters) doesn't appear.
As of this episode, the only main characters to appear in every episode are Macy Vaughn, Mel Vera, and Maggie Vera.

Maggie heard Galvin's soul during a figurative threshold between night and day when the sun was setting and again when she stopped in a doorway. The Abiku demon wanted to possess Macy in the attic where Marisol brought her back to life because it served as a threshold between life and death. In one episode of the original, the Charmed Ones were attacked by trolls that could only exist in tween places, such as threshold, or places between light and shadow, and midnight when they could roam freely for an hour.
Macy telekinetically stopping Galvin's heart to force a parasitic demon out of his body was similar to Prue driving a knife through Piper's heart to force a life essence out of her.

Niko: "Tell met the truth--you're hiding something from me."

Mel: "You're right and I'm not going to anymore. I'm a witch."

Niko: "Did you just do a spell? Is this a coven?"

Mel: "I will tell you everything, but right now you have to go."

Niko: "No. no way."

Macy: "Harry taught us it is my actions, not my nature that defines me and I believe that."

Galvin: "Macy I know that you're not evil but something inside of you is."

Macy: "You really feel that way?"

Galvin: "Macy please. what I saw in you-- I can't unseen it. Not if it's still there."

Macy: "So what are you saying?"

Galvin: "I'm saying I don’t want anything to do with any of this stuff ever again."

Macy: "But this stuff is who I am."

Maggie: "I know you're feeling in between the witch and demon of it all right now, but I want you to know the goodness inside of you isn't going anywhere and feeling split between two sides of yourself doesn't make you any less than."

Macy: "I wish you'd be just as kind to yourself."
