The Veil is a plane of existence where ghosts with unfinished business reside.

Overview[]

When living beings travel to the Veil, they leave behind magical footprints—which is their ticket back to the world of the living. However, if a spirit is touching the visitor while leaving the Veil through the footprints, then the said spirit is able to make it back to the land of the living along with the visitor. If that happens then the magic in the land of the living will become unstable, until the spirit returns back into the Veil.

As the Veil is a place of shadows and darkness, the spirits residing in it can be fought with magical light, such as the power of photokinesis, coming either from a magic user, or a magical lantern.[1]

History[]

In "The Tallyman Cometh", Harry Greenwood used his newly acquired power of Necromancy to communicate with Donnie Hoblinka's spirit in the Veil, which he explained to Jordan Chase later on was the dimensional plane where spirits with unfinished business reside.

In "Cats and Camels and Elephants, oh my…", after finding a mummified corpse in the Tallyman's lair, Harry suggested using his new powers to figure out who it is and what the Tallyman's plan was, which Maggie Vera eventually agreed to—despite her reservations. Upon entering the Veil, Harry was greeted by the spirit of the corpse, who is revealed to be the Tallyman's older brother, Nolan Moore. Nolan revealed that the Tallyman's real name was Quentin, and his younger brother had stabbed him to death. Harry ended up getting sidetracked, however, when he was informed that another spirit, a Charmed One, was asking similar questions and believed it to be Macy Vaughn.
While trying to wake Harry up, Maggie unwittingly mimicked Harry's power and entered the Veil herself. There, she found Harry, who was staring at the spirit of the Charmed One. However, instead of Macy, it was the Guardian, who explained she was after the same thing as them: information on what was coming. There, she also explained how she and her sisters—the first Charmed Ones—went up against a powerful being that killed one of the sisters and started the curse of the Destruction of the Sisterhood. Harry and Maggie's presence in the Veil aroused more spirits, who wanted to leave the Veil by taking their footprints and return to the land of the living, but the Guardian helped the two escape the Veil by holding back the spirits long enough for Harry and Maggie to return to their point of entry and leave.

In "Unveiled", Harry enters the Veil by touching the signature signed in blood by a dead man. He realizes the spirit to be Dexter Vaughn, Macy and Maggie's father. He had died trying to reassemble the Unity Bowl, which cursed him when he touched the first half and ultimately killed him. He had been in the Veil ever since, keeping watch on a monster. When the monster realizes Harry is alive, it tries to catch him. Dexter tries to help him escape, but accidentally touches Harry's glowing footprints while holding onto him. This helped him return to the living world.

In "Truth or Cares", Dexter's presence throws Maggie's powers and all magic around the house out of balance, making everything work in reverse. Maggie uses a resurrection spell to restore the balance (using her reversed magic to kill everything that shouldn't be alive) and Dexter is sent back to the Veil.

In "Hashing It Out", TBA

In "The End Is Never The End", Harry visited the realm to talk to the Unnamed Troll who sacrificed himself after planting a bomb to end all magic. He convinced the troll to tell him what Inara was really planning.

Known Residents & Visitors[]

Trivia[]

  • Presumably Roger and Daisy could also inhabit the Veil, before being accidentally summoned by Macy and Maggie in "Spectral Healing".
  • It could be presumed that Necromancers are only able to communicate with the spirits that reside in the Veil, while Harry Greenwood, after becoming a "Necrolighter", is able to astral project into the Veil in order to conversate with the spirits there.
  • If a spirit escapes from the Veil into the physical world, the magic on Earth will begin to work in reverse.
  • The Veil is similar to the Ghostly Plane in the original series, the plane of existence where spirits of the dead pass through on their way to the afterlife.
  • From the way it was shown in the reboot, the Veil is also most likely an analogue of purgatory, where souls who have not found peace arrive. The existence of a soul release known as "peace" was confirmed by Ishta when she informed Harry and Maggie that Macy eventually found it by moving on.
