The Vittra is an ancient order who protected the secret of magic by killing any magical being who exposed it to mortals. They were notorious enough to receive an entry in the Vera Family's Book of Shadows. They are known to wear older fashion and carry a bag that houses a deadly tentacle creature, which they use to carry out punishments on the exposers.

They are also forbidden from attacking humans, otherwise they would be punished themselves.

As times changed, their numbers have dwindled and went to near extinction.

History[]

After Maggie and Kaela are trapped at the Blue Camellia in 1926, the Vittra arrived and holds up the club in search of the muse, Camellia, whom had apparently caused a ruckus in Paris with her magic. While Kaela and Camellia hide in Roxie's office, the Vittra had her first chronological run in with Maggie and managed to defeat her. The Vittra made her way to Roxie's office, where she sent one of Seymour's tentacles out to attack Camellia, but Kaela was able to slice through the tentacle with a sword, causing Seymour to retreat back into the bag which the Vittra dropped and released a pair of power cuffs. Kaela told the Vittra to leave, threatening that Seymour would lose another tentacle, prompting her to gather her bag and hurry away. As she left, Kaela told her that she'd see her again in 96 years.

In the present of 2022, the same Vittra in Philadelphia came across a butterfly created from Kaela Danso's power of manifestation. She started tracking her until she found her bus, but ran into Maggie Vera instead. After a brief fight, she followed Kaela's scent to a party where she set off a fire alarm to draw the partygoers away while attacking Kaela. However, Maggie and Mel Vera arrive in time to stop her. When the Vittra sends her tentacle creature, Seymour, to attack Kaela, it directly impales her friend Brynn instead. Despite it being a mistake, the tentacle swallowed the Vittra whole as punishment for attacking a human.

Trivia[]

  • In the folklore of northern Sweden, the vittra (plural: vittror) are a type of vættr, nature spirits common in Scandinavian mythology, that are said to be distant and do not usually meddle with humans. However, they can be fearsome if enraged, as they will make one's life miserable or dangerous and will do whatever it takes to drive them away, harm, or kill them. It is said the vittra dwells in Norrland in the high woods or in the fields.
  • The term vittra is a doublet of "vätte," which is a Swedish word meaning "gnome" in Nordic mythology, that is derived from the Proto-Germanic and further Proto-Indo-European languages, from which it has the meaning of "thing," "object," or "creature" (possibly a euphemism). Additionally, in Swedish, vittra has two other meanings with the first being "to break down into small particles; to weather" and the second being "to smell; to pick up a scent." The latter may be the inspiration for the series' version of the Vittra, as they are known for sensing magic through scent.
