The Whispering Evil was a parasitic, formless monster that was unable to survive without a host. His origins trace back to over twenty thousand years ago, when he was trapped inside the Tomb of Chaos by the Perfecti. However, in 2021, he managed to escape into Seattle by taking over the body of Jordan Chase. Not long thereafter, the Whispering Evil was expelled from Jordan's body by the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones using the Power of Three combined with Macy Vaughn's reacquired, demonic fire power. The Vera-Vaughn sisters were then able to vanquish him, however this proved only brief as he later regenerated himself and escaped once again. The Whispering Evil was finally vanquished once and for all by Macy in the Cave of Ancients when she consumed the highly powerful toxin, bioluminescent lichen, as he attempted to possess her. Yet, his demise came at a great cost: his death inside Macy had caused damage to her body on a cellular level, eventually leading to her tragic death.

History[]

Early life[]

Albeit through unknown circumstances[5], one or more of the incarnations of the Charmed Ones unsuccessfully battled with the Whispering Evil with the help of the Power of Three until the monster developed immunity to it.

Over twenty thousand years ago, the Whispering Evil was deemed too chaotic by the Perfecti and consequently imprisoned inside the Tomb of Chaos. There is an ancient African myth about the monster.

In 2021, the monster found a loophole in Jordan Chase, who happened to be the first human ever confined within the tomb. The Whispering Evil possessed him, and together with him, managed to get out of the Tomb of Chaos after the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones turned against the Perfecti when they attempted to reimprison Jordan who had been wrongfully imprisoned to begin with. With Jordan freed, the Whispering Evil found himself back out in the world.[6][1]

Throughout the Series[]

In "Perfecti Is the Enemy of Good", just before Mo and Aladria are imprisoned within the Tomb of Chaos, they earnestly warned the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones that they were making the wrong choice. With a sense of urgency, the Perfecti stressed that, without them, the Vera-Vaughn sisters would never survive "another, more terrible danger" that was coming.

In "Schrodinger's Future", after Maggie Vera had a terrifying vision of the future, she and Macy Vaughn traveled to the year 2026. Arriving in a dystopian SafeSpace, Seattle, the sisters inadvertently trigger an alarm, leading to an encounter with future-Abigael Jameson-Caine. Future-Abigael revealed to them that a dark force known as the Whispering Evil had corrupted all of humankind, demons and witches. Despite valiant efforts from a resistance faction, the odds against the Whispering Evil seem insurmountable, particularly due to the absence of the Power of Three: Macy now possessed by the malevolent monster, an infected Maggie killed by Abigael, and Mel Vera mysteriously absent.

The infected future-Macy arrived at SafeSpace, effortlessly overpowering and vanquishing Abigael with a burst of flames. Present-day Macy and Maggie escaped, grappling with the shock of witnessing Abigael's demise. They later acquired a board of information on the Whispering Evil from future-Mel at the Vera Manor. Pursued by the infected future-Macy, they managed to narrowly escape back to 2021. After returning home, the sisters delve into the insights left behind by future-Mel, unaware that the insidious presence of the Whispering Evil may have already infiltrated their present reality, hinted at by the ominous silhouette looming over the city of Seattle.

In "What to Expect When You're Expecting the Apocalypse", the Whispering Evil finally presented himself by infecting people within SafeSpace, Seattle, among those infected are Swan, along with her assistants, and even a seemingly innocuous clown. At this juncture, the malevolent entity had successfully taken over the body of Jordan Chase, employing it as a vessel to cloak his nefarious intentions and evade detection. Employing a strategy of misdirection, he sows seeds of doubt and suspicion towards Antonio Garcia and Harry Greenwood, effectively diverting attention away from his own machinations. This calculated move buys time for his "soldiers" to assert control over their unwitting hosts. Despite the fact that the monster was eventually discovered to be possessing Jordan after Maggie had a premonition of his evil acts, Macy, Maggie, and Harry were surrounded by infected people and could not stop him. With a malevolent grin, the Whispering Evil departed from the scene, seamlessly disappearing among the unsuspecting people into the bustling streets of Seattle.

In "The Storm Before the Calm", the Vera-Vaughn sisters visited an imprisoned Aladria within the Tomb of Chaos to get some information on the Whispering Evil. They found out that in order to expel the monster out of Jordan's body that they have to hit it with an attack that the monster had never seen before. Thus, Macy enlisted the help of Abigael to reacquire her demonic powers. Meanwhile, after Maggie had a premonition that the Whispering Evil was about to implant a drop of his blood into the water supplies of Seattle to infect everyone in the city, she confronted "the Jordaning Evil" face to face. While combating Maggie, he managed to infect her, but the process was interrupted when Mel and Macy arrived. The Charmed Ones used the Power of Three combined with Macy's newly reacquired power of pyrokinesis to attack the monster, as no Charmed One in history had ever possessed demonic firepower. Due to the unseen attack, the Whispering Evil was forced to leave Jordan's body, effectively curing everyone that he had infected. In his primordial form, the monster resembled a black, spiky living goo that emitted smoke and seemed to float through the air. Mel was able to freeze the Whispering Evil and then Maggie smashed him to pieces with her spear. Everyone believed the Whispering Evil to have been vanquished before Macy realized that he was still alive. Another visit to Aladria in the Tomb confirmed Macy's fears, as Aladria explained that he will come back more powerful than ever. In the end, he was shown regenerating in his primordial form before flying back out into Seattle.

In "I Dreamed a Dream…", Macy ventured into the Cave of Ancients in pursuit of a sample of bioluminescent lichen. Aladria had disclosed that this substance was the sole toxin capable of destroying the Whispering Evil. Just as Macy secured the sample, the malevolent entity launched a surprise attack within the cave, striving to possess her and urging her to become one with him. Drawing on her memories of her trip into the future with Maggie, where she witnessed her future self succumbed to the monster's possession, Macy resisted fiercely and ingested the toxin, vanquishing the Whispering Evil once and for all. Despite her triumph, the violent death of the entity from within her exacted a devastating toll, inflicting irreparable cellular damage to her body. Tragically, Macy ultimately succumbed to the repercussions of the monster's demise.

Personality[]

The Whispering Evil embodied malevolence and cunning, exhibiting a sinister intelligence honed over millennia of existence. Upon escaping his confinement through possession, he displayed a relentless pursuit of power and domination, manipulating individuals and events to further his own agenda. The monster was adept at exploiting vulnerabilities, as seen in his possession of Jordan Chase and subsequent manipulation of events to evade detection.

The Whispering Evil's ultimate goal appeared to be corruption and subjugation, as evidenced by the dystopian future where he had successfully corrupted all walks of life. He was relentless in his pursuit of this objective, including infecting individuals with his malevolent influence. However, beneath his facade of malevolence lies a sense of self-preservation, as seen in his regenerative abilities and adaptability when faced with unforeseen resistance. Despite his apparent defeat, the Whispering Evil remained a lingering threat, capable of returning even more powerful than before. In summary, the Whispering Evil was a cunning and malevolent entity driven by a thirst for power and domination, willing to manipulate and corrupt any who stood in his way.

Physical Appearance[]

The primordial form of the Whispering Evil took the shape of an amorphous, black, spiky goo that emitted smoke.[2] When possessing Macy and Jordan, it appeared as a pulsating yellow glow within their throats, accompanied by periodic whispering or clicking noises.[4][1]

Powers and Abilities[]

Active Powers
  • Possession: The ability to forcefully take control of and inhabit another's body.
    • Host's Powers: If possessing a host that already has magical abilities, the Whispering Evil could tap into the host's powers and use them as its own. When it briefly possessed Macy Vaughn, it gained access to her powers, however, as the possession was short, it never had time to access them.
      • Pyrokinesis (erased future): The ability to create, control and manipulate fire. In the dark future, the Whispering Evil had learned to use Macy's demonic fire. In 2026, he used this to kill future-Abigael and tried to kill Maggie and Macy who arrived from 2021.[4]
  • Claw Extension: The ability to turn one's fingernails into claws.
    • Virus Inducement: The ability to infect others with a virus. The Whispering Evil used his claws to infect others with a virus that brought out their darkness and turned them extremely hostile. When he was left without a host, all of his victims were healed.
  • Flight: The ability to propel oneself through the air. In his primordial form, the Whispering Evil was able to fly.
Inactive Powers
  • Immunity: The ability to render oneself completely unaffected by magic or physical harm. The Whispering Evil adapts very quickly, he is enough for him to face any attack at least once to get immunity from any power. His immunity is so strong that he can even withstand the Power of Three.[2]
  • Sound Emission: The ability to emit sound through the throat. The Whispering Evil used this to release whispering (sometimes clicking) noises to communicate with his "soldiers" from a distance. He would also make the whispering noises when he was on the hunt.
  • Regeneration: The ability to reform one's body after total destruction. After being frozen by Mel Vera and smashed by Maggie Vera, the Whispering Evil was able to completely regenerate himself from the black puddle left on the floor.

Weaknesses[]

  • Unseen Attacks: The Whispering Evil could only become immune to magical powers after he had been exposed to them. An attack that he didn't see coming was enough to defeat him and drive him out of his current host's body.
  • Foresight: The Whispering Evil is not able to hide from Maggie's visions, and she could find him anywhere. For some reason, the monster had no immunity from this power. It could also be possible that the Whispering Evil was only immune to active, offensive powers and not supportive powers.
  • Molecular Inhibition: The Whispering Evil could be frozen by Mel's molecular abilities, though it could be due to his being weakened at the time from his expulsion from Jordan's body.
  • Bioluminescent Lichen: The Whispering Evil could be killed by a toxin known as bioluminescent lichen, which can only be found in the Cave of Ancients. Macy was able to kill the Whispering Evil by ingesting this toxin while he attempted to possess her.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • The Whispering Evil makes his first appearance in "Schrodinger's Future". However, present-Maggie Vera and present-Macy Vaughn did not realize at that time that future-Macy was his host, so they considered her one of the infected people. Macy only realized the terrible truth in "I Dreamed a Dream…" as the monster attempted to possess her.
  • In "What to Expect When You're Expecting the Apocalypse", it was said that the Whispering Evil is a parasite that needed a mortal host, but for some reason, in "I Dreamed a Dream…", the monster was able to possess Macy, even though she was a demon-witch. However, it is possible that the Whispering Evil was able to possess her, because she was not a hereditary demon-witch and lacked immortality.
    • It is also stated that the Whispering Evil was able to escape by possessing Jordan Chase, because he was the first human that had ever been imprisoned within the Tomb of Chaos. However, this is contradicted by the fact that the Vera-Vaughn Charmed Ones had been trapped inside the tomb for a short time in "Witch Way Out" without being overtaken by the ancient monster, despite all three of them being humans.
    • It should also be noted that, despite being described as an entity that could not survive without a host, the Whispering Evil was able to survive for over twenty thousand years in the Tomb of Chaos without a host. However, it is possible that this could have been an effect of the tomb, though this is never directly specified.
  • The Whispering Evil is the third being known to have brought about the end of the Charmed Ones throughout history.
  • The Whispering Evil is also very similar to the Harbinger of Hell in season 1:
    • The activities of both at different times should have led to the same outcome.
    • They also both had a case of rough possession that ended in death for the vessel (Macy for the Whispering Evil and Janet in the case of the Harbinger).
    • The appearance of their primordial form as a living, black goo is a reference to Venom, a sentient alien symbiote in various Marvel Comics media.
