The triquetra is an ancient symbol that has been used to represent the power of the Charmed Ones. It's a triangular figure composed of three interlaced arcs, or (equivalently) three overlapping vesicae piscis lens shapes. The symbol was placed on the cover of the original Vera Book of Shadows and, as such, was also placed on the cover of the recreated book.
When magical beings see the triquetra, they know that it represents the Charmed Ones.[1]
Trivia[]
- In the original series, many covens and individual witches used the triquetra as their symbol, though it is mainly used as the symbol of the Charmed Ones' bond through the Power of Three and Warren Line of witches. Whenever the Charmed Ones were in turmoil and used their powers on each other in an offensive way, the triquetra split, resembling the broken bond. The leaves of the triquetra disconnected, and the circle disappeared. As a result, the Book of Shadows and the sisters lost their power in the process.
- Also, in the original series, the triquetra could be used to create a portal to another plane of existence or time. By drawing the triquetra on a wall, the Charmed Ones were able to open a portal to the Astral Plane by touching the points of the triquetra, and later Chris Halliwell used the triquetra to cast a spell to travel through time.
- In the comic continuation of the original series, a talisman bearing the triquetra was given to Charlotte Warren by the first witch, Isabel/Neena.
- According to Joey Falco, in the canceled fifth season, it would have been revealed that the triquetra represents three overlapping universes: the world of the original series, the reboot series, and an additional third universe consisting of male Charmed Ones.[2]
- In real life, the triquetra has different designations and various forms of image.
- The triquetra is from Latin Tri- "three" and Quetrus- "cornered."
