The Whitelighter Resurrection Ritual is a ritual that can be used to resurrect deceased humans and convert them into Whitelighters.
Overview[]
The formula for the spell was invented by Celeste during the Salem witch trials to create magical guides and protectors for witches.
For a human to become a Whitelighter, they need to be killed by mortal means. For example, when Harry Greenwood was first made into a Whitelighter, it was after he was killed in a car accident while attempting to save a young child. However, it is also possible for them to be poisoned by magical poisons as long as it is administered by a human, as shown when Harry was made into a Whitelighter for a second time after Jordan Chase poisoned him with the Stillness. According to Celeste, the targeted humans stand their best chance at returning to life if their body is as mildly damaged as possible. Thus, their tissues must be as preserved as possible.
History[]
As shown in a flashback of "The Truth about Kat and Dogs", Harry Greenwood remembered how the Elders' acolytes had performed this ritual on him, drawing out the darkness from within him in a smoky form before trapping it in a bottle. Later, he remembered that Celeste was also present there.
In "I Dreamed a Dream…", a humanized Harry went to Celeste to demand to be made a Whitelighter again in order to heal a fatally inflicted Macy Vaughn. Jordan Chase killed Harry with a poison known as the Stillness, then Celeste began the ritual. However, Harry failed to revive. They then started resuscitation procedures, with Celeste magically charging the defibrillator while Jordan shocked Harry. The procedure resurrected Harry with Jordan inside the circle, giving them both powers.
Ritual[]
Creating A Whitelighter[]
Form a circle of salt around the body of the deceased mortal, draw the symbol of infinity on the mortal's chest using black amber and then chant as follows:
- All mortal debts are paid,
- In the reaper's endless night.
- By the goddess, be remade,
- Arise, reborn in light.
A burst of magical energies will erupt from the sky and imbue the body with powers and immortality. Once the ritual is completed, the tree sap will vanish into the body.
Soul Splitting Spell[]
Hold out an enchanted bottle and chant the following:
- Diffinde virum, duplica.
- Scindetur cor ab anima.
- Translation
- Split the man, double.
- The heart will be split from the soul.
Trivia[]
- It is shown in The Truth about Kat and Dogs that the ritual originally consisted of splitting the darkness from the person's soul, thus creating a Darklighter duplicate of them in the process. These Darklighters were given no physical form and were locked away inside bottles within Castle Breithe. In I Dreamed a Dream…, Celeste skipped over this step while resurrecting Harry Greenwood as a Whitelighter once again in order to not create another Jimmy.
- As Darklighters were previously stated to having been a "great cost" for the creation of Whitelighters, it is unknown how Celeste was able to refine the ritual so that it no longer required the removal of the negative aspects of one's soul and the creation of Darklighters. It could be that, as Whitelighters were created to be the protectors and guides of good witches with no negative aspects, the creation of Darklighters would be a "great cost" of achieving this and, since Celeste no longer desired to remove those negative aspects from Harry, she just skipped over the process.
- It can be presumed that it was during this ritual or directly after that a Whitelighter's memories of their mortal lives were taken from them and they were given a new identity as a way to ensure that the Whitelighter remained focused on their duty rather than any unfinished business from their mortal lives.
- This ritual shares a similarity with the Immortality Stripping Ritual, as they both require the symbol of eternity to be placed on the body of the person undergoing the ritual. However, for the creation of Whitelighters, this symbol must be painted onto the person with a paint that includes black amber (in Harry's case, the symbol was painted on his bare chest, although it's unclear if this is the standard location - as it might be deemed inappropriate for potential female Whitelighters), while for the Immortality Stripping Ritual, it is required that the symbol is carved onto the arm. While the Whitelighter Resurrection Ritual resurrects the individual and grants them Whitelighter powers, the power stripping one is brutal as it necessitates self-harm.
